Beacons of Best Practice: Efficient Phonological Assessment and Treatment
A Two Day Workshop Offered
October 26-27th, 2010 in Orange County, CA
With Jessica Barlow, PhD, Professor, Speech Language and Director, Phonological Typologies Laboratory at San Diego State University
Efficient Phonological Assessment and Treatment will cover the most critical concepts of complexity theory, a framework that promotes teaching phonetically-complex, later-developing and nonstimulable sounds. During the past fifteen years research has driven a paradigm shift demonstrating the efficacy of complexity theory. Such shifts require SLPs to carefully study and apply these principles.
The conference will provide the opportunity to put the principles into practice for ten case studies (children ages 4-7). By the end of the two days, participants will possess the tools and knowledge to apply this methodology to their own caseloads. This effort leads to reduced treatment time and a more expedient return to classroom instruction.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this program, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the rationale for conducting in-depth assessments that lead to more efficient treatment outcomes.
2. Discuss the principles of complexity and the body of research that supports this methodology.
3. Utilize evidence-based intervention techniques for treating phonological disorders.
4. Apply the principles of complexity to expedite the progress of children on participants’ caseloads.
